Mayor Michelle Distler - Retirement Reception
Thank you, Mayor!
Hi Mayor - Before tomorrow's election, we wanted to send you a quick note to say thank you for all that you've done for the City of Shawnee in your years as Mayor, and for your additional years on the Shawnee City Council. You've done a great job in representing your constituents, and you now deserve a break. After attending a number of City Council meetings, we're really not sure how you've done it?! This is not the proper forum to discuss the weaknesses that exist within the current Shawnee government, but I think it is safe to say you've had your hands full. We've been incredibly angered by them treating you as a "lame duck" these past 6-9 months when there were still very important decisions to be made as the Mayor. Aarrgghhhh!!!! Good luck to you in all that you accomplish moving forward Michelle. We've been proud to call you our Mayor (and friend). - Lance D.
As I'm heading to the polls today, I do so with a very heavy heart - having to try and vote for the lesser of two evils. I've lived in Shawnee (Easter Shawnee, close to the Price Chopper) since 2011. This has been the longest I've ever lived in any one place in my life. I love it here. You were a wonderful mayor. You always had the good of the people in mind and you always stood up for what is right, even in the light of aversion. You are such an inspiration to me and I'm going to miss having you as our mayor. I've joked (but seriously considered for a brief moment) to just write your name in, but I respect your decision to step down and I understand; they've been treating you really badly lately and I'm so sorry. My heart goes out to you! Mayor Distler, thank you for everything. Yours truly, - Yana E.
This morning as I was praying you came to mind. Thank you for how you have served the City of Shawnee. I pray blessings on you as you pursue what's next in your life. - Matt M.
A few years ago, you listened to our daughter and gave your support in a time she was hurting. We have never forgotten that and will always be grateful. Thank you for your service to Shawnee and Best Wishes in you next adventure. - Jodi H.
Michelle, I tried to vote like you would but I was pretty sure you would not tell me who was the one to get in this year. But maybe next time you will? You were the first mayor who ever emailed me back on the questions seniors might have. I met you and talked to you twice in person and you talked to me back. I wonder if you are staying? Your family has been through the fire with you . I would never blame you if you left either. Politics is vicious and not for the kind and wise people. That is a sad loss, you are a sad loss to our town. Very much so. Thank you for being the first politician I loved and for your down to earth stance, your abiding love, your desire to improve our town=WHICH YOU DID, and not giving up when there was cross Fire. I appreciate you for all you did for us and for me in particular. I am now very sad but will stand by to see how awful this gets. I hope not. I wish you could have helped me vote for honest people if there are any!! Please take care of you and I hope you find something that fits you and speaks to you and lights up your joy rather than diminishes you with in-fighting for no gain. Know I adored you and will miss the person behind our town. Thank you for your service in the combat Zone. And now your daughter and family may get you back! Best wishes and God's blessings for your next chapter. Vivian M.
You have been a great mayor and as a long time resident I have seen all the good things happen here during your term. I deliver to the fire houses and they look great. - Sean G.
Kind of weird not seeing your name on the ballot. You've been on my mind a lot. I've been praying for you for several reasons. - Melissa M.
Of all of the city officials, elected or otherwise, I am hard pressed to think of another who thought of people before systems or careers. - Mitch B.
As a Shawnee resident, I appreciated your dedication to the community, your willingness to speak to our neighborhood residents about current topics, and I truly valued our partnership on the Rails and Trails project silencing the BNSF train horns and providing access to local parks for community members. - Blake H.
Mayor Michelle, I read with sadness your decision not to run for another term. While I did not always agree with your positions I respected you and I always felt you believed you had the best interests of the City at heart. I too lament the politicization that has grown exponentially ---into even local politics. Now more than ever we need to come together and yet now we seem even more polarized. I will miss your leadership as will the city. I further appreciate the untold hours you gave to the city and to its citizens. Thank you for the time, passion, and open mindedness you shared during your tenure. It will be missed. - Don L.
Mayor Distler, We're so sad you aren't going to run for Mayor again. We saw the article in the SM Post. Is there any way you'd reconsider? We're going to miss you terribly. We think you're the best! I want you to know........I understand why you've made this decision, I truly truly do. I'm just sad for us, and frankly, a little scared as to what this city's future looks like. You are our last line of defense of reasonableness, and now.........sigh, I just don't see any positive options in the field of candidates. Honestly, if my husband's parents weren't JoCo local and elderly, I think we'd be looking at moving. Which is sad after a quarter century here. In any event, I just didn't want to let any time pass without letting you know my thoughts after I read the SM Post. I hope you'll surround yourself with only the best, most positive people as you navigate the remainder of your term. Deborah A.
Dear Mayor Distler, I’m sure you probably don’t remember me….Regardless, I just wanted to let you know I have always supported you, your politics, and your common sense!
Your leaving will be Shawnee’s loss, but hopefully a much better “environment” for you. We have all been fortunate to have had you as our leader for so many years. I wish well in your future and perhaps our paths will cross again one day. jim M

Yes Mayor Michelle, you will be missed! The one thing about our past mayor's including you, you have grown up in this city and know "us". I just pray our next major will too have the heart of our city in their DNA. It's been fun reconnecting since you were a Nieman, Antioch & SMN student with our son, Steve Blake. We will miss you in office but know our "family," connection is there forever!! Best to you and your family. Happy Easter! - Debbi B.
